Last night my phone vibrated and I opened it up to see a picture message from my friend Amy. It was titled "What would Jill do...." and had this image:
I have a secret to confess. I'm also addicted to saving glass jars. The other day at my boyfriend's house I washed the pickle jar and stashed it in the cupboard because I couldn't stand to throw it out!!! And then I almost cried when I threw the salsa jar out a couple days later.
I couldn't keep it though. I just didn't know what I was going to do with it, and couldn't justify saving it.
This is where you come in. What can we (me and Amy) do with all these glass jars?!?!

Punch holes in the lids and use as shakers
store buttons, ribbon, and other pretty embellishments in a way you can see them
nail the lids to the bottoms of shelves, then when you screw the jars on you have hanging storage containers that better use vertical space.
cover and use as a pencil holder
decorate and use as a light cover
candle holders
make layered recipes like soup in a jar and brownies in a jar and give as a gift
knit cozies to go around them and use as coffee cups

With the big jars you could make your own apothecary jars. Glue to a candlestick and add a finial to the top of the lid. -Liz

I've actually been asking the same question lately. I've done some web searching and have decided to use a bunch of them for Christmas gifts this year, and fill with "layered" mixes, like all the stuff to make hot chocolate, or cookies or something.
ReplyDeleteAnd/or I'm thinking to etch the "plain" ones (acid etch or dremmel etch) for candle/votive holders for gifts as well.
Or use them in my scrapbook room for embellishments.
Or move some to the garage to organize some of my son's smaller toys in their rotation (pompoms, buttons, etc).
Oh, or I was going to make homemade "bath salts" and put them in the glass jars, with a bath poof or something tied to them.
Or, if you make your own apple butter or something, you could re-use the jars for that.
I also store all of my son's opened snacks in glass jars in the cabinets. Like if we open a big bag of raisins, I'll pour some of it in a glass jar and store that on a low shelf and put the giant bag on a high shelf.
I also move rice and stuff like that and pasta from their bags (which are hard to store w/o making a mess) into glass jars.
Those are the ideas I've got right now, but I've got plenty of jars, so I'm going to be on the lookout for more ideas ;) So I'll be back here. Good luck!

ReplyDeletei too can NOT throw glass jars away! we have SO many! we have a ton that we use for drinking glasses, use some in crafts (we have 2 boy), storing craft supplies, honey jars make adorable vases, jelly jars are perfect for the kiddos to drink from, put marbles & tea light candles in them ~ hang from wires and then from your porch umbrella, i keep the ones i haven't found a use for in the garage . . . . i'll come up w/ a craft sometime!
ReplyDeletePut a string of fairy lights around the inside and put in some pot purri. Treat it like a candle, you should get a nice glow off it and the heat of the lights will give off a scent, which can be refreshed with fragranced oil. They make great gifts, especially for people with children as safer than a candle.
